Mr Bones 2 has continued its magic on the box office by grossing an All Time South African Record of almost R9 million in the opening week of release for a local film. The film which opened on 27 November, also shattered non-holiday opening weekend records for South African films, grossing a massive R6.2 million. The film has proved to be critic proof with audiences turning out in droves to watch the latest offering from South Africa’s Number One Box Office Star, Leon Schuster.
Leon Schuster said, “I am delighted with the fantastic response to Mr Bones 2. It is extremely gratifying for me to have the continued support of the public. It is also really humbling for me to have this kind of recognition as the audience is foremost in my mind when I make movies.”
Producer, Anant Singh commented, “We are thrilled that the audience has embraced Mr Bones 2 to such unprecedented levels. As filmmakers we are delighted with the unequivocal stamp of approval given to the film. Mr Bones 2 certainly provides the best comic relief and gets people into the spirit of the holidays.”
Group Executive of SABC Content Enterprises, Mr. Mvuzo Mbebe said, “The SABC is pleased that Mr Bones 2 has been breaking box office records and we are delighted to have partnered with Videovision Entertainment on this homegrown production.”
In another amazing feat, Mr Bones 2 with its modest Rand budget outgrossed the first week’s earnings of the US$200 million budgeted Quantum of Solace which earned less than R7.9m in its first week of release in South Africa. The box office success of Mr Bones 2 illustrates that local films with local content are able to attract huge audiences. It also shows that South African films can generate income and opportunity for the South African Film Industry.
