Cinemas around the country that hosted free screenings of Sarafina! today experienced capacity attendances with crowds of people arriving ahead of time to secure seats. The free screenings were a collaboration between Videovision Entertainment, United International Pictures, Ster Kinekor, Nu Metro, Times Media and e.tv in an initiative to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of 16 June 1976.
Lead actress of Sarafina!, Leleti Khumalo was in attendance at the Maponya Mall cinema where throngs of people were waiting to greet her. “It was an emotional experience for me,” said Khumalo. “Coming back to Soweto, the place where we filmed the movie 25 years ago, was truly special. I was overwhelmed by the number of people who came out today to watch Sarafina! and pay homage to the youth of 1976. The film has relevance not just today, but will remain a tribute to the 1976 generation for many years to come.”
Producer, Anant Singh said, “We were thrilled to be have had the opportunity to celebrate the courageous young people of the Class of 1976 with the screenings today. We are delighted that the audience at the screenings spanned teens to mature adults and family groups, and I thank our partners who helped perpetuate our rich legacy.”
For members of the public who were not able to watch the film at participating cinemas today, e.tv will broadcast the film tonight at 8.30pm on its free-to-air service as well as on Channel 194 on the DStv platform. There will also be a repeat broadcast on e.tv at 00:15am and on eMovies+ on Saturday, 18 June at 6.00pm.
