It is with profound sadness that I learnt of the death of Phyllis Naidoo this morning. She was selfless human being who was committed to the struggle against apartheid and devoted her entire life to the attainment of democracy in South Africa.
Despite bannings, house arrest and a multitude of restrictions placed on her by the apartheid regime, she fought the system resolutely. Phyllis was the person that activists turned to in their times of need, finding refuge and safety in her care.
In mourning her death, we also pay tribute to her for her sterling contribution to a democratic South Africa and as a mother of our liberation.
My heartfelt condolences go to her daughter Sukthi, her grandchildren and her entire family.
May her soul rest in peace.
