I am deeply saddened by the death of Arthur Chaskalson.
He played a significant role in our liberation history and after we achieved democracy.
He will always be remembered for being part of the defence team of the Rivonia Trialists and for the establishment of the Legal Resources Centre. As one of the foremost legal minds in the country, it was no surprise that he was appointed President of the Constitutional Court by Nelson Mandela in 1995. As a champion of freedom and democracy in South Africa, he played a huge role in the creation of our constitutional democracy.
I salute him for his resolute commitment to our nation’s struggle and his contribution to our democracy.
My heartfelt condolences go to his family and we wish them strength and fortitude during this difficult time.
