We are deeply saddened by the death of our dear friend, Philip Tobias.
Philip dedicated his life to the study of man and human ancestry. As a palaeo-anthropologist he changed our understanding, as human beings, of our ancient ancestry. He was acknowledged as a world authority in his field.
He was passionate about his work and continued at Wits University long after his mandatory retirement.
My first association with him began when he was involved in the Steve Biko inquest. He was a man of tremendous energy and wit, and my family and I had the pleasure of spending time with him over the years. He was always proud of growing up KwaZulu Natal and spoke fondly of his days as a student at Durban High School. He was a role model and a global citizen who lived life to the fullest, with integrity and honesty.
We are proud to have had him as our friend and he is a great loss to us and to all of South Africa. We will miss him and so will his many friends and associates all around the globe.
May his soul rest in peace and our sympathies go out to his family and friends.
