Leon Schuster’s Mr Bones 2 has triumphantly entered 2009 by earning a record R30 million at the South African box office in less than 5 weeks. This rapid box office earning has made Mr Bones 2 the only film in the history of South Africa to gross over R30 million in less than five weeks.
“This is a great achievement for any film. It is most significant for us as Mr Bones 2 is a proudly South African production. We are thrilled that Mr Bones 2 has, since its release, performed consistently at the box office despite competition from international block buster films which has not affected the earning potential of the film. Additionally, we are delighted that the film has out-grossed the big films of 2008 including High School Musical 3, Mamma Mia, Quantum of Solace, The Dark Knight, Hancock, Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar 2,” commented producer, Anant Singh.
Leon Schuster said, “I am overwhelmed by the audience support for Mr Bones 2. It is extremely encouraging for me, my co-writer and director, Gray Hofmeyr and the entire Mr Bones 2 team as we have withstood the stiff competition from the big Hollywood movies. Making a sequel to Mr Bones 1, the most successful film of all time in South Africa, was a challenging task and it is very refreshing that audiences have responded so enthusiastically, with some people rating it better than Mr Bones 1.”
“Mr. Bones 2’s phenomenal performance at the box office is full testimony to the fact that local talent can attract audiences and be commercially successful. We are extremely proud of Videovision Entertainment and Leon Schuster for producing such a high-quality film that South Africans have unequivocally embraced. As the public broadcaster, the SABC is proud to endorse and invest in South African talent while remaining commercially competitive. By entering into a broadcast and equity partnership in Mr Bones 2, the SABC has shown full commitment to the development and nurturing of local talent,” said Mvuzo Mbebe, Group Executive: SABC Content Enterprises
