Statement from Anant Singh on the Passing of NBA Commissioner David Stern

It is with great sadness that we woke up this morning in South Africa, to the news of David’s passing. David was a very special human being and my family and I were very fortunate to have had him as a friend for almost 20 years.

David leaves behind an exceptional legacy, including bringing the NBA to South Africa and our continent – for which all Africans are grateful.

His commitment to sport, humanity and the people of the world is legendary. He will be missed by millions across the globe. We were very fortunate to spend time with him and Dianne in New York for a few days in November.

On Nelson Mandela’s passing David said, “The loss is humanity’s, but the world is better off for his full and purposeful life.”  This is equally fitting to David and his contribution to the world of basketball and sport in general.

We will miss his friendship advice and his wonderful sense of humour.

Our love and sympathies go out to Dianne, Eric, Andrew and David’s wide reaching NBA family.
