Chronicle and selected scenes of Safe House which were shot at Cape Town Film Studios have topped the box office charts in their opening weekends in the United States. Chronicle which opened on Friday, 3 February grossed US$22 million in its opening weekend, while Safe House which opened on 10 February, earned a whopping US$40 million in its first weekend.
Chronicle is directed by Josh Trank and stars Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan and Michael Kelly with production services provided by Film Afrika Worldwide. Safe House, the Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds starrer produced by Universal Pictures had production services supplied by Moonlighting Films.
Cape Town Film Studios has consistently been the home of high profile international film productions in South Africa since it hosted Dredd, first major 3D action film to be made in Africa. The film reintroduces popular comic book character, Judge Dredd initially brought to life on the big screen by Sylvester Stallone. Dredd will be released in South Africa on 28 September 2012.
