Videovision Entertainment acquisitions receive 9 BAFTA Nominations

Sanjeev Singh, Videovision Entertainment’s Director of Acquisition and Distribution, announced today that An Education and The Road which were acquired by the company received a total of nine BAFTA nominations.

An Education which will be released in South Africa on 29 January 2010 received eight nominations: Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director – Lone Scherfig, Best Actress – Carey Mulligan, Best Supporting Actor – Alfred Molina, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design and Best Make Up & Hair, as well as the Rising Star Award for Carey Mulligan.

Set in London in the early 60s, An Education charts the journey of the bright and ambitious, Jenny who is on her way to Oxford, but feels stifled by her conservative parents and strict school, and yearns for a life of culture and sophistication. When she meets the smart and funny David, who is considerably older than her, those passions are engaged – along with several others – but her grades soon start to slip.

The Road, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by American master Cormac McCarthy (No Country For Old Men), received the nomination for Best Cinematography. The film stars Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Robert Duvall and Charlize Theron. It will be released in South Africa on 5 February 2010.

The Road follows The Man (Viggo Mortensen) wakes up one night, and he and his wife (Charlize Theron) discover the world is on the threshold of ruin, and we witness the aftermath of a wholesale cataclysm, relayed with chilling realism. With food supplies dwindling and communities beginning to turn on each other, the Man sets out with his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) on a relentless journey of survival. Slumping across a barren United States.

Sanjeev Singh commented, “We are thrilled with the nominations received by An Education and The Road at the BAFTAs. We are also delighted that An Education received eight BAFTA nominations, alongside Avatar and The Hurt Locker, while The Road is sharing the Best Cinematography nomination with Avatar, District 9, The Hurt Locker and Inglorious Basterds. We also expect both these films to receive Academy Award nominations next month.”

An Education and The Road are Videovision Entertainment releases through United International Pictures (South Africa).
