‘Sarafina!’ A Triumph For The Youth of South Africa

The digitally re-mastered Director’s Cut of the hit musical film, Sarafina! will be released across 41 screens in South Africa tomorrow to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprising of 16 June 1976.

To coincide with the release of the film and also celebrate Youth Day, SABC 3 will broadcast the documentary, From Soweto To Hollywood And Back at 7.30pm on Friday, 16 June. Sarafina!, produced by Anant Singh and directed by Darrell James Roodt, stars Leleti Khumalo alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Miriam Makeba.

From Soweto To Hollywood And Back is the behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, Sarafina! and follows the production of the film during its shoot on location in Soweto. The documentary includes recent interviews with the key talent involved in the film, to give a current perspective on the production which was done prior to South Africa’s first democratic elections.

Producer Anant Singh commented, “We are pleased that the SABC will broadcast the behind-the-scenes documentary of Sarafina! Sarafina! is a tribute to the youth and we are delighted to be releasing the film in the week South Africa commemorates the 30th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprising. The documentary, From Soweto To Hollywood And Back will take the viewer on an informative journey of how we made the film under very unique circumstances. It was during the period shortly after the release of Mr Mandela from prison and we were fortunate enough to have his support, and that of the ANC for the production. ”

Sarafina! is a Videovision Entertainment release through United International Pictures (South Africa) with the support of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). United International Pictures is widely recognised as a leading international film distribution company and are responsible for the distribution of global movie hits from the major studios such as Paramount, DreamWorks and Universal Studios.
