SELMA, the dramatic account of one of the pivotal events in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s civil rights movement garnered two Academy Award nominations, it was announced earlier today in Los Angeles. The film which is distributed in South Africa by Videovision Entertainment, received nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Song – Glory by John Legend and Common. Earlier this week, the film won the Best Original Song award at the Golden Globes.
SELMA is the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic struggle to secure voting rights for all people in America – with a dangerous and terrifying campaign that culminated with the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and which led to President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
SELMA, directed by Ava DuVernay, features a star studded cast which includes rising star, David Oyelowo; Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Tim Roth,Tom Wilkinson, Carmen Ejogo, Giovanni Ribisi, Dylan Baker, Alessandro Nivola, Wendell Pierce and Henry G. Sanders.
