Karl Urban the lead actor in Dredd arrived in South Africa today for a publicity tour and to attend the South African premiere of the film in Cape Town on Wednesday, 26 September 2012. Dredd which was acquired by Videovision Entertainment for distribution in South Africa, is directed by Pete Travis, and also stars Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey. It will open at South African cinemas on Friday, 28 September 2012.
Dredd opened at the Number One position in the United Kingdom and has earned almost R40 million at the box office since its release there. The film also opened strongly this past weekend in the United States.
Dredd is set in future America which has become an irradiated wasteland. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC lies Mega City One – a vast, violent metropolis of over 400 million citizens living in perpetual fear. The only ones attempting to impose order in the urban chaos are The Judges. Law enforcers, juries, judges and executioners rolled into one. The epitome of these Judges is Dredd.
Dredd has a special connection with Cape Town and South Africa as it was the first film to be shot at the state-of-the-art Cape Town Film Studios and it also features a host of local actors. Additionally, a huge number of South African crew worked on the film.
